Lone Survivors!

Picture
Nearly 30 Colt athletes took a shot at qualifying for the prestigious right to compete for the Division III Championships at Cerritos College next Saturday. In the end, only one group was able to survive the test.  The boys varsity 4x400 relay team of D'Juan Shamburger, Eric Williams, Ryan Cavaness, and Greg Hennes prevailed just enough to get into the finals.  A season best time of 3:26.20 for the two sophs and two juniors gives them a shot to go for All-CIF honors in the most exciting race in track.  Many other teammates still performed with great results and personal bests for the season and had plenty to be proud of, but in one of the toughest divisions in the USA making the final was a monumental task.  The 4x100 boys relay team just missed the final by .14 but had a season best time by nearly .5 seconds.  Daniel Salazar ran a courageous race in the 800m, but the sophomore placed 13th missing the final as well.   Amena Williams finished her track career with a valiant effort in the 100H placing 16th.  Altogether, Covina had a great season and has one last group aiming to make the banner...

On To CIF!!!

Picture
As expected, the Covina Colts Track team stampeded its way through the Valle Vista League Finals sending nearly 30 athletes to compete at Estancia High School this upcoming Saturday afternoon. Numerous Colts were crowned league champions. Boys boys varsity relay teams took 1st place as well as Kevin Herrera (3200m), Serena Hausman (LJ/TJ), Pearnell Smalley (300H), Charleson Agustin (PV), Vanessa Hernandez (3200m), Greg Hennes (400m), and Ruben Retana (Shot).  The team will try to continue its hot streak at CIF prelims!

Covina Crowned League Champions...Again!

Picture
In the league finale vs. Northview the Colts couldn't be stopped and once again captured the Valle Vista League Championship. The girls have now won three titles in a row and the boys have won five (13 of last 14 years). This week the team will start thinking individually with league prelims on 5/6 and league finals on 5/8.  We will be at San Dimas and see how many league champions we can crown and move on to CIF!

SGV's Done, Northview Next!

Picture
The Colts competed in the SGV Championships at San Dimas HS the past weekend to excellent results.  Many personal bests were achieved in the very competitive meet.  The FS girls squad took a very respectable 3rd place out of the nearly 40 SGV schools in attendance.  The boys 4x100 team of Smalley, Williams, Hennes, and Shamburger placed second overall in the meet with a season best time of 43.63.  This week the Colts finish off the dual meet season with league rival Northview at home on Thursday.

All Divisions Place at Cougar Classic!

PictureLawrence with the selfie!
Covina High Track continued on its hot streak this week.  The team pounced through San Dimas on Thursday and Saturday.  The double dual meet vs. Nogales and San Dimas Thursday all but sealed a share of the Valle Vista League title with victories from the boys and girls varsity teams.  The team continued on to Saturday at San Dimas for the Cougar Classic meet which was rained out on 3/1.  Although considerably smaller, the team still showed its strength by winning the boys varsity, taking second in the girls varsity and boys frosh-soph and 3rd in the girls frosh-soph. Vanessa Hernandez stole the show by breaking the girls varsity school record in the 3200m.

Lawrence Killens had perfect timing during this selfie in the boys 4x400 relay.  Eric Williams had the presence of mind with 150 left in the race to strike a pose? Maybe Eric should be looking a little more tired during his race? I'm sure some extra 150s can help with his expression....

Boys Sprint Through Arcadia!

Picture
The prestigious Arcadia Invitational was held this past weekend and a few of the Covina boys were fortunate enough to compete with excellent results.  On Friday evening, the sprint medley team of D'Juan Shamburger, Eric Williams, Greg Hennes, and Daniel Salazar ran a terrific race placing 5th in the seeded heat and also broke the school record by 5 seconds! The three sophomores and one junior look to improve off of that time in the future.  The 4x100 team that included Pearnell Smalley, Williams, Hennes, and D'Juan also did well taking first place in the first heat of the 4x100 on Saturday morning.

Covina Invite Has Out of State Flavor!

PictureIntern Hunter Sherman Anchors CHS Coach Relay!
In the 23rd edition of the Covina Invite, St.  John Bosco dominated the boys varsity and boys FS team events convincingly while Faith Lutheran from Nevada edged Oaks Christian for the girls team title. Covina HS boys varsity took 4th and boys FS took 2nd. The meet had over 30 schools participating packed into Azusa Pacific and it was a great atmosphere capped with some great performances. Savannah Miller of Redlands HS high jumped 5'11" and was named GV athlete of the meet.  Oaks Christian decathlete Zach Bornstein was awarded the BV athlete of the meet by winning the 110HH, discus, and pole vault.

Braves Fall to Colts!

Picture
The boys team allowed BP to win only two events on the day while the girls depth was able to overcome some star athletes from BP. When it was all said and done, Covina remains undefeated in league.  The meet was highlighted at the end of the day with the superb soph 4x400 team crushing the FS school record by three seconds. Eric Williams, D'Juan Shamburger, Daniel Salazar, and Tony Parks each ran terrific legs to earn the new record. With it being so early in the season, they may have another opportunity to lower their time! Tomorrow, we host the Covina Invitational at APU!

Colts Sweepstake at Chino Relays!

Picture
Proving once again to the neighborhood that Covina Track & Field is one of the best teams in the valley, the team cruised to relatively easy victories in Division 2 of the Chino Relays. Actually, based on the marks, the Colts would've won Division 1 as well.  The team placed in almost every event and along the way broke a couple of school records on the girls side.  The sprint medley and 4x800 teams smashed previous school records easily.  The boys 4x1600 team was just one second off of the school record, but the good news is, none of the members of that team graduate! The team also won the Sweekstakes trophy for best boys and girls team combined scores.

Covina Runs to New Heights!

Picture
In the Valle Vista League opener for the Covina Track team, the Colts found themselves on the road vs. host Wilson of Hacienda Heights and Pomona.  All three levels prevailed to solid team victories.  The boys varsity was led by soph Eric Williams who anchored the 4x100 relay to an impressive win and also captured the long jump with a personal best of 21'1". He also took first in the 100m and triple jump.  The girls were led by Serena Hausman who won the HJ, LJ, and TJ.  On Saturday, the team travels to Chino Relays for everyone's favorite meet.

Medals Galore at Monrovia Relays....

Picture
Covina Track ventured to Monrovia HS once again for an early season relay style meet between 22 schools from SoCal.  Covina again held their own against some stiff sprint competition but the C-Town boys distance team showed their dominance placing high in almost every event. Kevin Herrera was a big highlight of the meet with a personal best 4:29.77 in the 1600m pulling away easily in the last 100m for a solid win.  The boys 4x800 team of Herrera, Tony Parks, Angel Lopez, and Daniel Salazar also had a convincing win.

Covina Takes All Titles!

Picture
In a meet dominated by the Colts, Covina High Track took all three Covina Valley USD titles for the boys varsity, girls varsity, and boys fs divisions last Thursday.  The boys varsity won 14/16 events contested steamrolling their way to victory. The girls and fs boys were equally successful winning most of the events through the day. The team will tune up with a fun meet as they return to Monrovia HS on Saturday for the Wildcat Relays where the team is expected to do well. Complete results from the meet are below!

Boys Team Take SGV Champs, Girls Finish Second!

PictureShamburger clears 6'4" for FS school record
In a new meet for the SGV featuring the best of the best in the East SGV, the Covina Colts showed why they are and have been one of the best annual teams in the San Gabriel Valley.  Led by extreme depth in all events, the boys team captured the first ever meet by continually scoring in nearly every event.  The girls team finished a very respectable second place behind a strong Glendora girls squad.  D'Juan Shamburger stole most of the meets show by jumping an outstanding 6'4" in the high jump! That mark beats the Covina HS Frosh-Soph school record since D'Juan is only a sophomore!

Wildcats Give Colts a Good Run!

Picture
Monrovia High School as one of the best sprint teams in the San Gabriel Valley.  They gave Covina High everything they could handle in the opening meet of the season.  In the end, the boys team prevailed with a solid victory but the Lady Colts lost a close meet by a mere three points. The meet was a great start for CHS as they prepare for the SGV Champs on Saturday and return to Monrovia HS on 3/15 for the Wildcat Relays.
