The best in the SGV squared off in one meet on Saturday with the boys team looking to go 4 for 4 in invite 1st place titles this year. This meet would prove to have the stiffest competition to date with other local powers Arcadia, Damien, and Walnut also in the mix. After 9 events and the meet getting rained out the Colts were in the lead and took the first place crown! With many of their strong events left in the meet, it seemed the only thing in question would be how much the Colts would win by! As usual, it was a major team effort by all to consistently score points and extend the Covina lead. On the girls side, Demi Marine crushed her personal best and school record by nearly 14 seconds staying alive in a hot paced 1600m. Demi ran 5:07.71 and hopefully looks to improve that time with a few big meets still to come.

In the last home meet of the year, the Covina Colts track team welcomed the visiting Vikings to CHS while overwhelming them on every level. The Colts easily won the BV, GV, and FS levels while wrapping up undefeated league titles in the boys varsity and a three way tie for the girls title. This marks the 6th title in a row for the boys and 14th in the last 15 years! For the girls they have had a league championship the past four years in a row!

It has been the season of broken records for the Colts this track season! Four different relay teams broke four standing Covina records this past weekend at the Mt. Sac Relays. On Friday evening, the shuttle hurdle team of Brown, Williams, San Nicolas, and Phang beat the 4x110H record. That was followed by a 4x1600 relay team record of 17:56 by Herrera, Salazar, Lopez, and Hernandez... On Saturday the BV distance medley team of Hennes, Salazar, Herrera, and Lopez crushed the existing record, and then that night the girls 4x1600 team of Marine, Hernandez, Carlos, and Contreras obliterated the previous record. What a weekend!!!

Thursday's meet was a double dual vs. Nogales and San Dimas High Schools. The boys team prevailed again all but cinching their league championship. However, it was the ladies who ended up on the wrong side of the results. In a close neck and neck battle the Covina girls track team lost their first league meet of the season to San Dimas. Both teams came into the meet loaded and ready to compete with outstanding races all afternoon long. The loss puts Covina, San Dimas, and Rowland in a three way tie for first on the girls end. A win vs. Northview and the Colts will secure another league title to their shelf!

Covina High had the most acceptances into the prestigious Arcadia Invitational 2015, and the team did not disappoint showing they were more than worthy of the invitation. The 4x200 team (Smalley, Hennes, Brown, Shamburger) took 2nd, the distance medley (Pinedo, Centeno, Smalley, Lopez) were just one second off the school record, The 4x400 (Shamburger, Salazar, Brown, Hennes) had the best time for CHS in nearly 20 years, the 4x1600 (Salazar, Hernandez, Lopez, D. Hernandez) improved on their school record. But the best performance was the sprint medley team (Brown, Shamburger, Hennes, Salazar) who took 5th in the invite heat but that 5th placed them 6th in the nation overall. In a match with the newest Valle Vista League member, the Rowland Raiders entered the meet as the other undefeated team as two top programs clashed for first place alone in the league standings. In the end, the Colts were able to outlast the Raiders in a fantastic meet. Both boys and girls teams now have sole control of their own destiny as the meet the final three teams in league competition. Up next, the team will head to San Dimas for a double dual with the Saints and Nogales. But first, some of our top athletes head to Arcadia against some of the best competition in the nation.

In an unprecedented move, Coach Glaspy contacted Chino Relays meet management and requested a move up to Division 1 competition instead of Division 2 where there enrollment would be the proper fit. After dominating D2 for years, Coach felt this was a good year to challenge the team. With much closer races and events, things literally came down to the final event for 1st place at the meet. Both boys and girls teams prevailed with the slimmest margins. Boys took 1st 120-119.33 and girls 1st 122-120! Both teams needed to place high in the final event and both came through in stunning fashion. Next up, spring break and the Covina Invite on 4/4/15 @ APU.

The Wilson Wildcats paid a visit to CHS on Thursday for the Colts first league meet of the season. Although strong in numbers, the overall talent of Covina overwhelmed the spirited Wildcats. Covina won all three levels in convincing fashion losing only a couple events overall the entire day. The team continues their season this weekend with the 66th Annual Chino Relays which is always a fun filled meet.

The Colts traveled to West Covina High on Thursday to take on the neighboring rival Bulldogs in a non-league contest. All levels stayed on undefeated season pace taking out the Bulldogs on their home turf. Numerous boys and girls sprinted to solid victories and prepared themselves for the upcoming week vs. Wilson and the Chino Relays the following Saturday.

In the very first home meet in the newly built track and field and CHS, the visiting Monrovia Wildcats and Covina Colts dueled themselves to some great races on a cool Wednesday afternoon. Monrovia, led by a serious group of boys and girls sprinters showed flashes of greatness, but the depth of the 200 deep army of the Colts was just too much for the Wildcats in the end. Boys sprinters D'Juan Shamburger, Eric Williams, Pearnell Smalley, and Greg Hennes each won individual sprints as well as an exciting 4x100 relay. The team takes the weekend off except for a few athletes and then next week continues with a dual meet with neighboring West Covina High.
